Things People Said: Ruby Dee

Ruby Dee, actress, activist, and owner of a mellifluous voice passed away recently.  And it reminded me of a tv interview she did where she talked about wanting to take their grandkids to a movie she was in.  And one said, “I don’t want to go if you’re going to die in the end again.”  And she realized then that even her grandkids noticed that the virtuous black person usually died before the final reel.  And ever since then, whenever I watch a movie and there’s a “good” minority character, I sit in the movie and I keep thinking “don’t die, don’t die, don’t die….”  Nobody ever makes it past the final reel in life, but it is sure nice when one of us makes it in the movies.
